Can I Retrofit Tesla Batteries with my Home Solar Panels?

The Tesla battery Melbourne talking, but many would-be owners want to know whether they can install a Tesla battery into a pre-existing solar panel system.

Solar panel batteries can help you store power for a rainy day, so they’re a fantastic investment and a great way to get the most out of your solar panels.

Thankfully the short answer to “can I retrofit batteries for my home solar panel system?” is “yes!”

However, not all systems will be compatible, and it’s important to make sure your solar panels are battery ready first.

First up, what’s so great about the Tesla Powerwall 2?

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is arguably the best solar battery available right now for a number of reasons.

First, it is designed with the same masterful engineering as a Tesla car, complete with a 2170 lithium-ion battery, so you know it’s a top of the market machine.

Second, the Tesla Powerwall 2 includes an AC inverter, which means you may not need to install a hybrid solar inverter for your Powerwall battery to run, unlike other brands.
Third, the Powerwall has a tonne of storage – 13.5kWh in fact. This means you can power your home with your stored solar energy for longer.

Fourth, the Powerwall has a liquid cooling system, which means it can handle extreme temperatures as low as -20 and as high as +50 degrees celsius.

Fifth, the Powerwall software intelligently dispatches electricity when it’s needed most and can be operated from a simple to use app.

Sixth, the unit mounts seamlessly on both a wall or the ground, and can be positioned indoors or outdoors, while being connected to the grid to export excess energy for credits.

Finally, Powerwalls are stackable and unlike any other solar battery on the market, they can link together to combine into one large storage space for your solar power.

How to Add a Tesla Powerwall 2 to an Existing Solar Panel System

Provided your solar panel system is compatible, it is actually quite easy (from a technician’s perspective) to retrofit the Powerwall 2 into an existing set up.

Tesla themselves state that “the Powerwall can be added to an existing system that has solar panels and a backup generator connected with an external Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or Manual Transfer Switch (MTS). Powerwall is installed between the electrical service entrance and the transfer switch, where it charges from solar while the grid is operational. However, the Powerwall and generator are not directly integrated which means Powerwall does not charge from the generator.”

In our experience, the Powerwall 2 works well with a wide variety of systems with minimal alteration. However, there are a few caveats.

First, the Powerwall does not work with other batteries, only another Powerwall.

Second, the Powerwall does not suit other renewable energy sources, such as hydro or wind energy.

Finally, while the Powerwall can supply energy to your electric vehicle (EV) this is not its primary purpose, and as such, it does not come with a direct connection.

Add Battery Power to Your Solar Panels

If you would like to add battery storage to your solar panels, the Tesla Powerwall 2 cannot be recommended enough. The Powerwall can handle Australia’s high temperatures and has the convenience of working with a wide range of systems to the highest calibre.
